NORFOLK, VA – On July 3rd, 2024, NATO’s Allied Command Transformation proudly celebrated America’s Independence Day with a vibrant Flag Raising Ceremony followed by a festive family gathering at “NATO’s home in North America.”
The ceremony commenced with a stirring march-on of the colours by the esteemed Fife and Drum Band from Yorktown, Virginia. This historic display set the tone for a day honouring the shared values of democracy and freedom between the United States and its NATO allies.
The United States of America declared its independence on July 4th, 1776, marking a pivotal moment in world history. The Declaration of Independence, a cornerstone document, enshrined ideals of individual liberty, self-determination, and democratic values. These principles continue to resonate today, inspiring the nation’s diverse communities to come together each year on the Fourth of July to celebrate freedom and equality.
Following the devastation of World War II, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established on April 4th, 1949. This alliance, forged between North American and European countries, serves as a cornerstone of collective defence still to this day. The foundational Washington Treaty outlines key principles, including mutual aid and collective self-defence, binding its current 32 member states. These nations share a commitment to upholding democratic values, human rights, individual liberties, and the rule of law.
The Flag Raising Ceremony featured a special musical performance by the combined voices of the Virginia Beach Chorale and the “SOPC” choir made of up the partners of Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and civilian staff members at the command. Together, they delivered a powerful rendition of the United States national anthem, uniting those present in a spirit of patriotism from the command’s host country.
During his address at the ceremony, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Philippe Lavigne shared that “the United States remains the beating heart of the greatest military alliance in history. What President Reagan, in his farewell address, called the Shining City upon a Hill, an aspiration and an inspiration. In these challenging times, with the world, once again, turning upside down, the United States and its 31 Allies are needed more than ever.”
Established within NATO’s structure, Allied Command Transformation serves as the Alliance’s Warfare Development Command. Founded in 2003, it plays a critical role in strategic thinking, capability development, education, training, and exercises. Through collaboration and engagement, Allied Command Transformation also plans for the future of the Alliance by fostering cooperation between academic institutions, industry leaders, public entities, and private experts. Headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, Allied Command Transformation works hand-in-hand with local and international partners, ensuring NATO’s Military Instrument of Power remains the world’s most capable and adaptable defensive alliance.
Adding to the atmosphere at the event, a local U.S. Navy helicopter squadron, HSC-28, performed a flyover.
After the ceremony, staff members, and their families enjoyed a catered picnic and festivities for children. It was a fun-filled atmosphere for all staff members, fostering a sense of community as they celebrated their host nation’s birthday.
This annual event underscores the strong bonds between the United States and its NATO allies, highlighting their commitment to upholding democratic ideals and collective defence.
