Positioning Space at the Core of NATO Transformation
The NATO Space Centre of Excellence serves as a driving force in advancing the understanding, integration, and operationalization of space power across the Alliance. As the only NATO-accredited institution dedicated solely to space, the Centre provides knowledge, analysis, and practical solutions focused on three key operational functions: Space Domain Awareness, Operational Space Support, and Space Domain Coordination.
Through these efforts, the Centre enables NATO and Allied forces to enhance space-related interoperability, elevate doctrinal development, and expand engagement with national and international stakeholders across the defence, civil, academic, and industrial sectors. The Space COE also plays a key role in connecting NATO’s operational needs with emerging space capabilities, ensuring that space remains central to deterrence and defence.
Spotlight on the NATO Space Conference 2025
A landmark moment in 2025 was the launch of the inaugural NATO Space Centre of Excellence Conference, held in Toulouse from 28 to 30 April. This event brought together nearly 300 participants from 29 countries, representing military commands, governmental agencies, academic institutions, and commercial space enterprises.
Centred around the theme “Space in 2040: Deterrence, Security, Interoperability and Technological Innovation,” the conference explored the evolving strategic importance of space in the security environment of the future. Expert panels addressed the need for interoperability not only through technology but also through shared doctrine and culture, reflecting space’s growing role as a fully operational domain of warfare rather than merely a support function.
Discussions also underscored the importance of integrating space into NATO’s Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) concept. As space is intrinsically linked to all other domains, participants highlighted the urgency of enabling full MDO capability by 2030. The dual-use nature of space (which necessitates bridging military and civilian sectors) was also a recurring theme, with calls for NATO to accelerate cooperation with the commercial space sector to maintain strategic relevance.
Strengthening Alliances Through Knowledge Sharing
The conference offered a dynamic forum for fostering collaboration, identifying capability gaps, and sharing insights across national and professional boundaries. Participants noted the value of ongoing coordination to align Allied efforts and ensure that NATO remains prepared to operate and compete in increasingly congested, contested, and commercialized space environments.
Looking Ahead
The NATO Space Centre of Excellence continues to serve as a hub for Allied space expertise, working to bridge gaps between policy and practice, and connecting NATO’s evolving needs with the pace of space innovation. Its work contributes directly to the credibility, adaptability, and strategic reach of NATO forces, ensuring that space remains a core component of collective defence.
