Stability Policing as Part of NATO’s Military Comprehensive Approach

On 25th October, 2021, NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Paolo Ruggiero hosted the visit of Lieutenant General Enzo Bernardini, Deputy Commanding General of the Italian Carabinieri.

The visit followed the recent delivery of the Stability Policing Concept by the two NATO Strategic Commands, Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia and Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium, aimed at supporting the identification of the requirements needed to develop and implement a coherent Stability Policing capability.

During a round-table with the participation also of Allied Command Transformation Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Guy Robinson, Deputy Chief of Staff Resource & Management, Major General Robert Glab and Assistant Chief of Staff Joint Force Development, Brigadier General Ilmars Lejins, the relevance of police-related expertise in collapsed and fragile states was underlined in the frame of the Alliance’s comprehensive approach aimed at creating a safe and secure environment.

The added value of the Gendarmerie-Type Forces in the activities addressed to local population, police and Government was also highlighted.

At the end of the visit, closed by a working lunch, General Ruggiero thanked Lieutenant General Bernardini and expressed his appreciation for the contribution offered by the Carabinieri to Allied Command Transformation and to the Alliance, highlighting also the excellent work performed by the Stability Policing Centre of Excellence in Vicenza, Italy.
