NATO Ramps Up Space Focus with New Centre of Excellence and Symposium

April 30, 2024

TOULOUSE, France. The Space Centre of Excellence works to improve the Alliance’s expertise in the Space Domain and is assisting with the inaugural NATO Space Symposium this week. They provide knowledge, analysis, and products covering the three operational functions: Space Domain Awareness, Operational Space Support, and Space Domain Coordination.

Located in Toulouse, France, Space Centre of Excellence is the newest addition to the Alliance’s Centre of Excellence programme. Upon receiving its official accreditation in July 2023, the Centre has been working to expand its capabilities and build its staff from its 15 sponsoring nations. The Centre’s mission is to serve as the catalyst for the comprehension, improvement and transformation of space capabilities within the Alliance.

Earlier this month the Space Centre of Excellence participated in the 39th Annual Space Symposium alongside senior representatives from NATO Allied Command Transformation. Together, these NATO representatives highlighted the Alliance’s approach to the Space domain and future Space operations. Additionally, the met with senior leaders in the fields of Space from industry and academia in order to foster collaboration and enhance understanding of this domain within NATO.

This week, they are assisting with the inaugural NATO Space Symposium being held in the same city, Toulouse, France. The event, co-hosted by NATO Headquarters International Military Staff and Allied Command Transformation, has over 40 industries present, 21 of them are also hosting exhibits in the “marketplace” venue.  In total, there are almost 300 participants from 27 allied nations and all NATO entities.

The Space Centre of Excellence acts as a focal point for NATO’s space-related education and training, analysis and lessons learned as well as hands-on concept development and experimentation. The Centre also assists with the development of doctrine and standards by supporting the Alliance in accelerating work on space-related matters, and expanding NATO’s use of the space domain.

Through this work, the Centre serves as the catalyst for increasing space-related expertise across the Alliance, stimulating space interoperability for Allied nations’ space-related assets, and creating a bridge between the Alliance and all relevant national and international space organizations, as well as commercial sectors and academia.

Colonel Sylvain Debarre, Director of the NATO Space Centre of Excellence, is looking forward to building up its expertise as fast as possible:

“Now in its ramp-up phase, the NATO Space Centre of Excellence is already involved in supporting NATO on several major issues, including the integration of the space environment through the Multi-Domain Operations concept, the writing of the space operations doctrine, and the support of major joint allied exercises.”

NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence are multi-nationally established and sponsored entities, which offer recognized expertise and experience within a defined subject matter area to the benefit of the Alliance. Centres of Excellence are not part of the NATO Command Structure, but form part of the wider framework that contributes to the functioning of the Alliance. Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation coordinates the activities of the Centres of Excellence, ensuring that their outputs align with Allied Command Transformation’s Programme of Work.
