BUDAPEST, Hungary – The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence is a hub of military medical knowledge, providing the Alliance with medical innovation, training opportunities, exercises, and lessons learned. Military medicine has a direct impact on every service member throughout NATO because building a reliable and accessible community of medical expertise improves Alliance-wide readiness.
The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence, located in Budapest, Hungary, was established in 2009 and provides support to the NATO medical community. Through knowledge sharing, medical training, innovative capability development, and standards development, the NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence supports diverse health requirements throughout the Alliance.
One example is strengthening medical resilience through joint medical exercises, such as the Vigorous Warrior Multinational Medical Exercise Series, which was held in the Spring of 2024 in Hungary. All 35 participating nations had the opportunity to examine and solidify doctrinal concepts, train with multinational medical providers, and refine their medical assets. The exercise was focused on various issues ranging from the Framework Nation Concept to Force Health Protection, manoeuvring with medical units, Medical Evaluation, Concept Development and Experimentation and multiple other facets of military-medical sciences and concepts. The Military Medicine Centre of Excellence also organized a joint live exercise together with the Clean Care Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Medical Exercise. This is a biennial medical exercise conducted in a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear-scenario environment and provides a collective training opportunity for medical and defence organizations and personnel.
The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence provides support and assistance on all medical issues throughout the NATO command structure, as well as the civil and military organizations of NATO member nations. It has four medical branches, as well as a Directorate and a Support Branch that include: Force Health Protection Branch, Interoperability Branch, Lessons Learned and Innovation Branch and the Training Branch.
In response to the growing importance of medical innovation, the Military Medicine Centre of Excellence has undergone a significant transformation. They have established a robust remote capability, built a strong network of subject matter experts, and expanded their digital offerings to include online training and events. Their focus on disease surveillance has led to the development of a near-real-time medical surveillance module to enhance NATO’s medical capabilities. The pandemic accelerated their adoption of innovative exercise formats, such as the live table top Vigorous Warrior exercise. This format has proven highly effective in training command staff and will be incorporated into the upcoming, full-scale exercise.
Key resources of the NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence include the Medical Knowledge Management Portal, which enables users to create, share, utilize, and manage medical knowledge, enhancing the medical community’s overall readiness. Another resource is the Medical Concept Development and Experimentation Portal, where subject matter experts can collaborate on medical concepts and capabilities, focusing on innovative solutions for the medical challenges of today and tomorrow. Additional offerings include training and evaluation courses, such as Emergency Management of Battlefield Injuries, the NATO Medical Evaluation Course, and Military Psychosocial Incident Management. The Centre of Excellence has developed a unique software suite, the Near Real-time Surveillance Tool, which monitors the symptoms and signs of personnel in the medical treatment system and warns against contagious diseases or biological attacks. The system is currently deployed in two countries, and nations are encouraged to field it in their deployments or garrisons.
By fusing education, innovation, and collaboration, the NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence is at the forefront of ensuring the Alliance’s medical readiness. Through its comprehensive approach to military medicine, the Centre empowers NATO nations to address complex healthcare challenges and safeguard the health and well-being of service members. As the operational environment evolves, this Centre of Excellence remains committed to adapting and delivering cutting-edge solutions to protect and enhance the health of the Alliance.
