The Military Engineering Centre of Excellence is a vital contributor to NATO, dedicated to enhancing military engineering capabilities across the Alliance. Established in 2009 with Germany as the framework nation, the Centre of Excellence boasts a diverse team of 34 personnel from 17 nations.
As NATO’s leading authority in military engineering training and education, the Military Engineering Centre of Excellence provides essential knowledge, expertise, and support to member states and partners. Through a comprehensive range of courses, from strategic to tactical levels, the Centre of Excellence develops skilled military engineers. Additionally, the Centre actively contributes to the development of policies, concepts, and doctrines that enhance interoperability in NATO operations.
A cornerstone of the Centre’s mission is fostering a robust network of military engineering experts. By collaborating with partners and stakeholders, this Centre of Excellence identifies and addresses critical capability gaps, ensuring NATO remains at the forefront of military engineering. The Military Engineering Centre of Excellence’s annual Industry Exchange Seminar is a prime example of this collaborative approach, bringing together industry, academia, and military experts to share knowledge and explore innovative solutions.
This flagship event facilitates the exchange of knowledge and best practices, enabling participants to identify gaps in military engineering capabilities and develop innovative solutions. By aligning with NATO’s strategic objectives and doctrine, the seminar contributes to enhancing interoperability and strengthening the Alliance’s collective defence posture.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has underscored the critical importance of military engineering, particularly in the areas of mobility (bridging) and counter-mobility (barriers). The Military Engineering Centre of Excellence has been instrumental in capturing observations from warfighting activities and has studied them in panels of Military Engineering working groups. Over the last year, the Military Engineering Centre of Excellence, as an accredited NATO Education and Training Facility, conducted three Mobile Training Teams and twelve in-house courses, training over 370 personnel across tactical and operational military engineering roles. The Centre also provided instructor support to France and Latvia and extended training opportunities to several partner nations, including Ukraine.
