For over a decade, the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence has served as a key enabler in bolstering NATO’s collective defence posture. Located in Chania, Greece, the Centre plays a central role in advancing the integration of air and missile defence into the wider framework of Multi-Domain Operations.
Harnessing Innovation through Strategic Partnerships
The Centre leads several ground-breaking research collaborations aimed at detecting, tracking, and countering threats in real time. Partnerships with academic institutions and research foundations have yielded significant results. These include a joint effort with the Technical University of Crete to address hypersonic threats, and with the Institute of Computer Science and the Foundation for Research and Technology to develop passive radar systems capable of identifying unmanned aerial systems. Further research with the same institution explores novel ways to neutralize bio-inspired drones, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging challenges.
Driving Alliance-Wide Innovation Initiatives
The Centre’s involvement in NATO’s Innovation Challenges has amplified its role as a forward-leaning contributor to Alliance-wide solutions. It has supported efforts to counter threats such as glide bombs and fibre-optic-controlled First-Person View drones. Subject matter experts from the Centre have served as both evaluators and jurors, offering operational insight and technical rigor to the selection and development process.
Enhancing Preparedness through Simulation and Testing
Recognizing the value of modelling and simulation in preparing for complex air and missile defence scenarios, the Centre is building a dedicated laboratory to support NATO’s distributed synthetic training architecture. This facility will enable participation in synthetic exercises that allow for controlled, repeatable, and mission-relevant testing and training. Such environments help refine concepts and prepare forces for the demands of integrated operations.
Training the Warfighters of Tomorrow
Education and training are foundational pillars of the Centre’s work. The Surface-Based Air and Missile Defence Common Education and Training Programme is a four-day course designed to deepen tactical-level understanding of integrated air and missile defence. Focused on promoting interoperability, the course equips NATO personnel with the knowledge and mindset needed to operate effectively across the Alliance. To increase accessibility, the Centre also offers a Mobile Training Team version of the course, with the next deployment scheduled for September 2025 in the United Kingdom.
A Continuing Mission of Relevance and Readiness
Through its research partnerships, operational contributions, and commitment to training, the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence remains a cornerstone of NATO’s defensive architecture. Its efforts to anticipate future threats and support Alliance cohesion ensure that NATO remains agile, interoperable, and equipped to meet the evolving demands of collective defence.
