Crete Hosts 15th Annual Conference on Emerging Maritime Risks

June 5, 2024

On 4-5 June 2024, the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre hosted its 15th Annual Conference 2024 in Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete. The annual conference seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences across the international community. With an aim to improve collaboration on security, project stability, and explore solutions that focus on enhancing capabilities and operational effectiveness with a specific focus given to risks posed by ongoing conflicts and maritime challenges in the Middle East.

This year’s conference theme was “Risks and Challenges in a Dynamic Maritime Domain; Strategy Adaptations, Technology Innovations and the Operational Landscape of the Future.” The conference sought to identify strategic and technological adaptations necessary to enhance maritime capabilities in light of evolving challenges. The conference addressed a number of key areas of concern including security risks, environmental degradation, climate change, technological innovations, and economic competition.

The conference focused on current and emerging threats (regional geopolitical perspectives); climate change and its impact on maritime operations; the new era of digital transformation; defence against terrorism and trans-national crimes, with discussion about possible future scenarios and mitigations; Maritime Domain considerations and challenges during Multi-Domain Operations; Maritime Critical Infrastructure Protection; and Maritime Situation Awareness and Understanding.

Participation included representatives from NATO, its member nations, partner nations, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, as well as the broader maritime community of interest. Attendees also included representatives from military organizations, law Enforcement agencies, academia, judiciary and ministerial authorities, private sector, and the defence industry.

The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre was founded to “conduct the combined training necessary for NATO forces and Partners to better execute surface, sub-surface, aerial surveillance, and special operations activities in support of Maritime Interdiction Operations.” The Centre has established both individual and collective training programmes to address emerging challenges to maritime stability, as well as promote innovation and excellence in transformational efforts.

Maritime threats are a growing problem, especially in the Middle East with entities like the Houthis in Yemen threatening transit through the Red Sea. Identifying points of coordination, approaches, and lessons learned is increasingly critical for future security and stability.
