Lt. Gen. Dave Julazadeh’s retirement from the U.S. Air Force today marks the end of a distinguished career characterized by exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and profound contributions to the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Defense, and NATO. In his last assignment as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Capability Development, at Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh played a pivotal role in developing operational and strategic capability requirements on behalf of 32 NATO nations.

Throughout his career, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence, serving in a variety of roles that showcased his versatility and leadership acumen. From his early days as an F-16 instructor pilot to his many command tours at the flight, squadron and wing levels, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh’s career was marked by numerous achievements and accolades. Having served in Numbered Air Force, Major Command, Headquarters Air Force, Headquarters NATO, Headquarters U.S. Central Command, Headquarters U.S. European Command, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense staff positions, his leadership was not only well tested at the highest levels, but in demand. Throughout twenty-seven different assignments during his career, seven of which were at Joint Commands, he was stationed in 8 different U.S. states and 5 countries.

One of Lt. Gen. Julazadeh’s favourite assignments was serving as the commander of the 52 Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.  An assignment where he could “influence decisions at the strategic level, participate in operational-level activities and deployments, and get to know his Airmen at the tactical level… all while enjoying the friendship and hospitality of over 50 German communities where U.S. servicemembers from the Wing resided locally. It was a privilege to foster continued partnerships between the command and the Mayors of these welcoming towns.”

In his final assignment as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Capability Development at NATO Allied Command Transformation, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh was the senior U.S. Officer and was responsible for developing operational and strategic capability requirements for the Alliance. He also served as the Innovation Representative, Air Domain cross-functional Champion, and Champion for NATO’s Command and Control, Cooperative Cyber Defence, and Joint Air Power Competence Centres of Excellence. In these roles, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh played a crucial part in shaping NATO’s future capabilities, developing the Multi-Domain Operations Concept, and creating the first-ever NATO Space Symposium, ensuring the Alliance remains prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

“What an amazing time to be part of NATO,” shared Lt. Gen. Julazadeh. “A time where the Alliance, yet again, demonstrates its value as adversaries challenge the rules-based international order.  A time where, yet again, we welcome two new members into our family, demonstrating that NATO remains a credible shield against aggression.  A time where, yet again, NATO has transformed to deal with a drastically changed strategic environment and agreed to increase our warfighting capabilities.”

Lt. Gen. Julazadeh’s dedication to duty was further exemplified by his extensive operational experience, logging more than 2,500 flight hours, including 600 combat hours during operations Provide Comfort, Deny Flight, Northern Watch, Allied Force, Freedom’s Sentinel, and Resolute Support. His bravery and commitment to mission success earned him the respect and admiration of all who served with him.

Among his many awards and decorations, Lt. Gen. Julazadeh’s most notable honours include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters. “What a remarkable journey — a journey that took flight amidst childhood dreams, soared through the clouds of camaraderie and commitment, and landed here today, filled with gratitude,” the General poignantly expressed during his closing remarks.  “In the tapestry of my 34-year career, each thread is woven with the stories of incredible individuals, the dedication of teams, and the unwavering support of my family.  The lessons from mentors, the sacrifices of the silent heroes, and the collective spirit of the military community has shaped my life.  I am grateful for these experiences and thankful for the many friends I’ve made along the way.  And, most importantly, I will never forget the sacrifices made by my family.”
