The Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence stands as a pivotal force in bolstering NATO’s capacity to deter and defend against evolving threats. Positioned strategically in Chania, Greece, the Centre is at the forefront of integrating these capabilities into the broader spectrum of Multi-Domain Operations. By fostering collaboration among NATO nations, entities, academia, and industry, the Centre is driving innovation and enhancing the ability of commanders to anticipate, decide, and act decisively.
Collaborations
A cornerstone of the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence’s mission is to explore and harness emerging technologies. The Centre’s commitment to this endeavour is evident in its collaborative research projects. For example, a partnership with the Technical University of Crete produced a comprehensive study on hypersonic weapons, while a joint effort with the Institute of Computer Science/Foundation of Research and Technology – HELLAS is focused on developing AI-powered drone detection systems utilizing 5G signals. These initiatives underscore the Centre’s dedication to staying ahead of the technological curve and strengthening NATO’s defence posture.
Courses
Education and training are equally vital components of the Integrated Air & Missile Defence Centre of Excellence’s mandate. The Surface Based Air and Missile Defence Common Education and Training Programme is a prime example of the Centre’s commitment to developing skilled personnel. This four-day course equips tactical-level operators with the knowledge and skills necessary to execute Integrated Air & Missile Defence operations effectively within the NATO framework. By fostering a common understanding of tactics, techniques, and procedures, this course contributes significantly to enhancing interoperability among allied forces. The next course will be held in Nov 2024.
The Centre also plays a crucial role in knowledge sharing and best practice dissemination. A seminar on accounting management solutions provided a valuable platform for NATO COEs to exchange insights and experiences. The seminar facilitated collaborative discussions among legal advisors and financial controllers who were in attendance. This initiative highlights its dedication to supporting the broader NATO community.
Modelling & Simulation Laboratory
Recognizing the critical importance of modelling and simulation in Integrated Air and Missile Defence, the Centre is establishing a dedicated modelling and simulation laboratory. This state-of-the-art facility will enable risk-free experimentation, training, and analysis, ultimately enhancing decision-making and operational planning. The Centre’s new building, scheduled for completion in late 2024, will further expand the laboratory’s capabilities.
To ensure that lessons learned from Integrated Air & Missile Defence operations are effectively captured and disseminated, the COE is spearheading the creation of an Integrated Air and Missile Defence Lessons Learned Community of Interest in collaboration with the Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre. This initiative will serve as a central repository of knowledge and expertise, supporting continuous improvement in IAMD capabilities.
The Centre’s annual conference is another important platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among senior representatives from the military, academia and industry. The 2024 conference, themed “IAMD: Shaping the Operational Environment to our Advantage,” brought together experts from the military, academia, and industry to discuss the evolving Integrated Air & Missile Defence landscape and explore strategies for maintaining operational superiority. There were several areas of focus which included the current geostrategic military situation for Euro-Atlantic Partners; the new era of threats for the Euro-Atlantic area; the way NATO will meet today and tomorrow’s Integrated Air & Missile Defence challenges; and how this field will contribute to NATO’s Deterrence and Defence Posture.
The Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence is a dynamic and forward-thinking organization that plays a critical role in safeguarding NATO’s security. Through its focus on collaboration, education, research, and knowledge sharing, the COE is making significant contributions to the development and enhancement of these capabilities.
