On 29-30 May 2024, NATO’s Allied Command Transformation played host to the Future Maritime Warfare Symposium. Representatives from all 32 NATO member nations were in attendance in addition to leaders across United States military commands, various defence attaches, and representatives from the NATO Maritime Enterprise Centres of Excellence. The 2024 Symposium was opened by Vice Admiral Doug Perry and Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence Director Phil Nash.
The Future Maritime Warfare Symposium is a biennial event organized by the NATO Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence. The Centre was founded in May 2006, representing 13 nations and is dedicated to concept development, experimentations, and the development of doctrine and standards relating to maritime issues, working in close cooperation with NATO Allied Command Transformation, Allied Maritime Command, and the other NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence.
Each symposium is tailored to a relevant and pertinent theme for the maritime community. The theme for this symposium was ‘Fight Tonight whilst Transforming for Tomorrow’ and its panels tackled The Strategic Environment; The Drivers of Change; Transformation Opportunities and Threats; and Delivering the Vision.
In addition to the panels, presenters with varying backgrounds from the military to academia made the Symposium a critical event that allows NATO, its member nations, and the maritime community broadly to work together, collaborating to solve the problem sets facing the Alliance today and into the future.
