NATO Centres of Excellence Gather in Germany for Annual Conference

September 12, 2024

This week, the Military Engineering Centre of Excellence hosted the 2024 NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence Directors’ Conference at the German Army Engineer School. This annual event, a cornerstone of NATO’s collaborative efforts, brought together directors, or their deputies, from all 30 NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence. The conference provided a unique platform for fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and strengthening NATO’s capabilities.

Attendees delved into a wide range of topics, from recent Alliance developments to mutual support and cooperation. Centres of Excellence, renowned for their intellectual rigor and expertise, play a pivotal role in challenging NATO’s thinking and providing valuable insights.

The conference was marked by insightful presentations and discussions. A representative from the German Ministry of Defence, and Rear Admiral Placido Torresi, Allied Command Transformation Deputy Chief of Staff for Multi-Domain Force Development, delivered keynote addresses that set the tone for the event. Torresi stressed that “Multi-Domain Operations is one of the top priorities of Allied Command Transformation, and we count on the expertise of these Centres of Excellence to enhance this target.”

A dedicated session focused on the valuable lessons learned from “military learning” and the ongoing efforts to support Ukraine’s Armed Forces. Additionally, attendees were briefed on the NATO Defence Planning Process, Warfighting Capstone Concept, and Strategic Foresight initiatives.

NATO Centres of Excellence, nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions, serve as training grounds for leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries. They play a vital role in developing doctrine, identifying lessons learned, improving interoperability, and testing new concepts. These centres are supported by “Framework Nations,” “Sponsoring Nations,” and “Contributing Nations,” ensuring their continued operation and effectiveness.

Allied Command Transformation, one of NATO’s two strategic commands, oversees the establishment, accreditation, assessment, and coordination of Centres of Excellence. The command is focused on advancing Multi-Domain Operations and Digital Transformation to enhance NATO’s capabilities in the face of evolving threats.

Centre directors engaged in lively discussions on a variety of topics, including the implementation of NATO’s Warfighting Capstone Concept, actions in support of the Warfare Development Agenda, and Allied Command Transformation’s key priorities. By aligning their annual programmes of work with these strategic objectives, Centres of Excellence can more effectively contribute to NATO’s mission.

The 2024 NATO-accredited Centres of Excellence Directors’ Conference was a valuable opportunity for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic alignment. As NATO continues to adapt to a changing security environment, the contributions of Centres of Excellence will be increasingly essential in ensuring the Alliance’s continued effectiveness.
