Through AI in Audacious Training, NATO is delivering more credible deterrence and defence through advanced training initiatives.
Allied Command Transformation’s Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) is harnessing digital tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure NATO forces are trained to deter in competition, operate effectively in crisis, and win in conflict. This Bi-Strategic Command Audacious Training initiative drives a more realistic, innovative, and adaptive approach to collective training and exercises and prepares NATO’s warfighters to address immediate operational challenges.
AI-enabled training will play a pivotal role in enabling the future of NATO’s Collective Training and Exercises. In the first step, NATO is utilizing AI to generate storylines and events for NATO exercises. This capability reduces workforce burden. It also provides more opportunities for free-play, accelerating NATO’s journey towards a more digital, connected, and data-driven training delivery environment. Through the Maven Smart System – NATO’s first AI-enabled warfighting command-and-control software – ACT is supporting Allied Command Operations’ evolving exercise requirements.
Accelerating Exercise Transformation: AI is dramatically reducing the personnel required to design and deliver training exercises. Currently, NATO exercises demand a significant workforce, including augmentation from Allied Command Operations to support preparation and execution. By automating exercise storylines and events, AI is lowering the workforce burden, allowing NATO to repurpose resources toward higher operational priorities. Furthermore, AI enables scalable digital standards, allowing exercise complexity and scope to grow without a proportional increase in personnel demand, making NATO training both smarter and more efficient.
Learning From Real-World Experience: AI brings the power to learn from real-world operations and exercises, retaining insights at a scale and fidelity beyond human capacity. The Audacious Training Initiative is founded on the principle of preparing NATO to fight and win in dynamic, contested environments through training that mirrors real operational challenges. By leveraging AI to generate data-driven, context-aware scenarios, drawing upon NATO’s lessons learned and from other conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, training environments challenge assumptions, test adaptability, and foster innovation in a safe-to-fail space. This enables NATO to understand and prepare for tomorrow’s operational challenges before they occur.
Driving Digitalization: Efforts to incorporate AI into NATO processes are a catalyst for NATO’s digital transformation in training. Increased digitalization allows greater participation and collaboration across Commands and Nations, including remote support to exercise design and execution. This reduces the need for extensive travel to the Joint Force Training Centre in Poland, as well as the JWC in Norway, saving both time and resources. These efficiencies will be reinvested into operational readiness and capability development, ensuring lasting value for NATO and its Allies. AI in Audacious Training not only exemplifies NATO’s commitment to innovation and readiness but also sets the benchmark for future digital standards across the Alliance’s training enterprise.
