The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence supports and enhances NATO’s transformation and operational efforts by sharing expertise and engaging the broader explosive ordnance disposal community of interest.
The Centre is located in Trenčín, Slovakia, and received its official accreditation in 2011. As a recognized leader in the field of Explosive Ordnance Disposal, this Centre of Excellence enhances NATO’s transformational and operational efforts by providing expertise and support to the Alliance, Sponsoring Nations, and other military and civilian institutions. It also delivers valuable contributions to the Alliance’s Warfare Development efforts through its Education and Training Analysis and Lessons Learned, Concept Development, and Doctrine Development and Experimentation programmes.
The highlight of the Centre’s 2024 Programme of Work is the 10th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Workshop, which will be held in November. The overarching theme of the workshop is “Consistent Explosive Ordnance Disposal Capability Development.” The NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence is pleased to invite all Subject Matter Experts in the fields of Explosive Ordnance Disposal; Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear; Defense Against Terrorism; and Military Engineering, from NATO and Interoperability Platform Countries, to participate in this prestigious event.
The workshop will feature four key blocks of discussion: Explosive Ordnance Disposal as a Helper Around the Globe, Artificial Intelligence and Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training of Today and for Tomorrow, and Technological Helix and Synergies of Innovations. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with leading experts and discuss the latest advancements in their fields. Networking sessions will provide a platform for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. The event aims to foster innovation and strengthen international cooperation in explosive ordnance disposal and related disciplines.
One of the other main projects of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence is the ETACS – EOD/IEDD VR Training and XR Combat Support Kit . The first part focuses on the development of software that will utilize virtual reality as a means to enhance the current training of new Explosive Ordnance Disposal operators and bring innovation to their education. The second part focuses on research of technologies that could support operators in conducting Explosive Ordnance Disposal. The year 2023 was very significant in terms of new upgrades of the virtual reality software, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence has continued these developments throughout 2024 in order to deliver the final product to Explosive Ordnance Disposal units within NATO by the end of the project’s timeline in 2026.
In May, the project was demonstrated in the 2024 NATO COE Marketplace at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
Another highlight of the Centre’s Programme of work is its ongoing cooperation with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Military Engineering community of interest. In April 2024, the Centre participated in the 66th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Interservice Working Group hosted by the Spanish Army, in the city of Madrid. The Centre’s delegation joined the working group and contributed particularly to the Doctrine and Philosophy Panel and to the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures and Standardization Panel.
The Centre was represented at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Military Engineering Strategic Alignment Conference which was organized by NATO Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium in April 2024. The conference was an excellent platform for senior-level engineers to gain enough understanding to guide national force development and theatre preparation in a unified effort aligned with NATO plans.
Another important event was the 26th Military Engineering Working Group, which was held in June in Ottawa, Canada. The aim of this working group is to improve military engineering capabilities within the NATO capability development framework.
The Explosive Ordnance Centre of Excellence also participated in the 27th Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Working Group in Virginia, USA, in March 2024. The meeting was focused on the improvement of standards by NATO Military Committee Land Standardization Board guidance.
The Centre also participated in the 11th Counter Improvised Explosive Device Annual Discipline Conference which was held in March 2024 in Hoyo de Manzanares, Spain. The main aim of the conference was to collect and share information on requirements and opportunities through all Education and Training Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices activities in order to provide a holistic training landscape within the drafting of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Discipline Alignment Plan.
By actively engaging in the broader explosive ordnance disposal community and fostering collaboration among NATO and partner nations, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence is at the forefront of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of Alliance forces. Through its extensive research, development, and training initiatives, the Centre is driving innovation and enhancing operational capabilities. The upcoming 10th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Workshop represents a significant milestone in the Centre’s mission to cultivate a global network of experts dedicated to mitigating the risks posed by explosive hazards. As the Centre continues to evolve and adapt to emerging challenges, it remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting NATO’s mission and safeguarding lives.
