Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdáncsel

Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdán was born on 23rd May 1970, Nagykanizsa, Hungary. He entered the Hungarian Army on 28 August 1988 as a NCO cadet, attending a two-year long NCO School including Basic Training and Reconnaissance Advanced Individual Training, Leadership education at Eger, Hungary. He graduated in the top ten percent as a reconnaissance subunit commander.

He started his NCO career at the 34th Reconnaissance Battalion, in Szolnok as a Long Range Reconnaissance Company Supplier NCO in 1990. After two years, he was assigned to the 24th Reconnaissance Battalion in Eger, Hungary as a Long Range Reconnaissance Team Leader. During his early career, he has been involved in numerous major exercises and basic trainings as a drill sergeant. He has completed two tours in Egypt as Military Police, Patrol, Desk Officer and Acting Supplier Officer at the Multinational Forces and Observers in 1997 and 1998. He served as S3 Staff NCO at the 88th Rapid Reaction Battalion, Szolnok, Hungary in 1998. He was assigned to NATO position as a Team member of the Hungarian Liaison Team to HQ ARRC, Rheindahlen, Germany in 1998 -2001. Prior to Hungary’s accession to NATO he was a team member of the Invited Countries Liaison Staff to HQ ARRC.

SGM Bogdán served as the very first Command Sergeant Major of the HDF Land Forces in 2001-2003. His main task was to support the Land Forces Commander’s intent in establishing and building the Command Sergeant Major system within the forces.

Between 1 July, 2003 and 1 of July 2011 he served as the first Command Sergeant Major of the Hungarian Defense Forces. SGM Bogdán was responsible for mentoring the HDF's enlisted force and representing their needs to the senior leadership. As the first to ever fill this role, his priority was to assist the development of the new HDF NCO Corps. He ensured the enlisted force received professional development and standardization policies, including the functional areas of leadership, performance, training, education, appearance and conduct of enlisted personnel.

He served as a Course Director and Instructor at NATO School Oberammergau from 5 July 2011 to 15 July 2015.

Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdán assumed his position as the commander of the Hungarian Defense Forces NCO Academy NCO Leadership Development Team in 15 July 2015 through 3 Sept 2018 when he was selected as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL), Headquarters, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Norfolk, Virginia.

He has gained a valuable experience in leadership, from the tactical to the Strategic level as NCO next to the Commander; He has practical experience and theoretical knowledge in education, System building and sustainment, personal and group development in the Hungarian Defense Forces and in the international environment.

His military and civilian education consists of the HDF Noncommissioned Officers School in Eger, Hungary, Signal Course, Survival Trainings, Sharp Shooter Trainings, APC and Truck Driving Courses, Military Hand to Hand combat training, Airborne Basic Course, Paratrooper Trainer Course, English Language Courses, multilevel IT Courses, Communication Courses. He graduated from the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 53, including Battle Staff NCO, SGM and CSM courses. He completed his studies at Pécs Science University in 2008. He holds a BSc degree in Assistant Master in Engineering (Military Technical Teacher). His NATO education consists of numerous courses including NATO Orientation Course and NATO Advanced Leadership Course in 2007, NATO Academic Instructor Course in 2011, NATO Senior Enlisted Leadership Course in 2013. He successfully completed the DISC Everything (Inscape Publishing) personal and small group development trainer course, in 2013. He also studied Andragogy (Master) and Administrative Education at the King Sigismund University, Budapest.

Awards and Decorations include the parachutist Badge, US Army NCO Education level 4 Badge, NCO Service Honors Silver Grade, NATO Service Honors, NCO Service Medal 2nd Grade and 3rd grade, Peacekeeper Medal for Egyptian Mission, Multinational Forces and Observers Medal, NATO Kosovo Medal. He received the Soldier of the Year title in 2008. The US Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Hungarian Silver Merit Cross.

SGM Bogdán is married to Éva (since 1994) and they have two daughters, Kinga (1997) and Barbara (2000).
