DETAILS OF PROJECT:

The SA Branch monitors and identifies current and emerging security challenges to articulate strategic implications for the Alliance’s transformational efforts. Long-Term Military Transformation (LTMT) is NATO’s process for anticipating and preparing for the ambiguous, complex and rapidly changing future security environment. SA leads the process of developing Strategic Foresight Analysis (SFA) and Framework for Future Alliance Operations (FFAO) as part of LTMT. The Intern works with multi-disciplinary teams to analyse the future security environment, using quantitative and qualitative analysis methods.

Analysis of current political/strategic issues as directed by the Branch Head. Prominent among these will be issues related to NATO’s strategic concept or other strategic global strategic trends that have security implications to the Alliance. Analysis and research support for the HQ SACT LTMT programme, under the guidance of the Branch Head and the sponsor.

The intern should be able to interact with the academia and industry representatives on a wide spectrum of issues from crowdsourcing to innovative approaches.

The intern is expected to work on the following areas:

  1. Conduct research on strategic and security issues of importance to NATO and ACT.
  2. Provide analytical qualitative and quantitative support on related foresight work, in particular trends on political and social themes.
  3. Review, analyse, and synthesize existing documents on selected security issues, in particular those related to the Long Term Military Transformation of the Alliance.
  4. Participate in brainstorming and other conceptual discussions within the branch.
  5. Support the preparation of various LTMT events such as conferences, workshops, symposia, and other meetings (Travel is not authorized).
  6. Interact with Innovation Hub to support workshop and other activities in support of SFA/FFAO development.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLE(S):

The candidate is expected to:

  1. Prepare read ahead material and presentations and talking points/ notes for senior military staff.
  2. Develop reports of the workshops, meetings and other activities held at the HQ.
  3. Draft point papers, summaries, and supervised analysis to support LTMT efforts.
  4. Other deliverables will be tailored based on the experience of the selected intern and the requirements of specific projects.

TYPE OF BACKGROUND/EDUCATION PREFERRED:

Current or recent Post Graduate student in a relevant field e.g. international relations, political science or history, security affairs; however postgraduate degree would be more preferable.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel) programmes is required and SharePoint knowledge would be an asset.
