ACT, NATO Headquarters provide support to Pakistan humanitarian relief operations
Allied Command Transformation’s (ACT) Civil-Military Fusion Centre (CFC) and NATO Headquarters are currently supporting the ongoing crisis relief operations in Pakistan.
The CFC is located in Norfolk, Virginia, where a team of civilian and military subject matter experts work closely with one another to gather, analyse and share relevant information pertaining to natural or manmade crises through a website portal called the Civil-Military Overview (CMO).
CMO is a site that provides tools including situational reports, assessments, maps, information on the response, and links to other organisations hosting additional information on the ongoing flood response.
Key components of the CFC are its sector-focused Knowledge Managers (KM), whose experience and expertise allow them to better assemble, edit, fuse and disseminate information to the CMO’s user community. These KMs are continually liaising with their contacts within humanitarian and military organisations to gather information regarding the Pakistan flood response.
Additionally, a NATO Trainer Cargo Aircraft departed Geilenkirchen airbase in Germany August 22 with humanitarian aid to Pakistan to deliver relief goods such as water pumps, power generators and tents donated by the Republic of Slovakia.
“The NATO cargo flight is part of the international community’s overall effort to help Pakistan in this major humanitarian disaster. The Alliance’s support to the flood relief efforts follows requests that we received from the Pakistani authorities,” said Maurits Jochems, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations.
Last week the North Atlantic Council decided to provide airlift and sealift for aid donated by Nations and humanitarian relief organisations.
Since the first request for humanitarian assistance by the Pakistani authorities in early August, the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) at NATO Headquarters in Brussels has been acting as a clearing house for humanitarian assistance offered by NATO Allies, Partner nations and other international organisations.
