ACT Internship Programme

 

The HQ SACT Internship Programme 2010, aims to provide a small number of current or recent students with the opportunity to 'intern' with HQ SACT in Norfolk, Virginia. Interns will benefit by gaining understanding of an International Organization, while substantiating their Curriculum Vitae. All internship placements will run, in principle, for six months with groups starting in March and September each year.

The Programme has four Objectives:

To provide the Organization with access to the latest theoretical and technical knowledge that the intern can apply through practical work assignments, as well as with additional staff resources.

To provide interns with an opportunity to learn from the HQ SACT community and get a better understanding and a more balanced view of the Organisation

To contribute to creating a more diverse and gender-balanced workforce

To expand understanding of ACT and NATO in Alliance countries

Conditions for Internship / Eligibility Criteria

Interns will be students or graduates who have obtained their degree less than 12 months prior to the start of the internship programme:

Age: over 21 at the time of internship (for insurance reasons);
Nationality: nationals of a NATO member country;
Studies: at least two years of university study;
Languages: proficiency in one of the official NATO languages (English/French); desirable working knowledge of the other.

Interns are required to have health insurance coverage, and take care of formalities with the U.S. authorities regarding their stay in the United States.

All interns will require a security clearance from their national authorities prior to working at HQ SACT.
Remuneration: Starting 2007, Interns will be paid a lump sum of $750 per month. Subject to confirmation that the intern is not related in law or in the first of second degree to a member of the HQ SACT Norfolk/NCSA Norfolk Sector Staff. The payment is not exempt from taxation. Applicants advised that the cost of living and accommodation rates in the Norfolk area are high.

One Call per year, two starting dates: There will be one call for applications per year; from February until May with two determined starting dates, in September and in March in the next year. Internships will in principal last 6 months.

The intern shall submit electronically:

• The completed application form
• Curriculum Vitae
• Motivational letter, indicating why you want to intern at HQ SACT and why you chose a specific division

Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered further, and due to the high number of applications, no follow-up correspondence will occur if the intern fails to submit all papers (as described above).
The closing date for applications is 10 June 2009, any applications received after 1700hrs on 10 June 2009 (EST) will, with no exceptions, be rejected as an untimely submission.

A security clearance from the intern's national authorities is mandatory before the internship can start. HQ SACT will not provide assistance to initiate the process to gain a security clearance, until after an intern receives a conditional offer of acceptance into the Internship Programme.

If the intern holds a grant or scholarship, this should be made known in the application.
