Lieutenant General Viereck was born 1951 in Kassel (Germany).
He started his military career with the German Airforce in 1970 and after pilot training at Sheppard AFB, USA, he served first as a combat pilot, then as operations staff officer.
After attending the German and Danish General Staff Officer Courses, he served several times at the Federal Ministry of Defence, as a Commander of a Fighter Wing and eventually became Commander of the 4th Air Division.
He was Deputy Chief of Staff and Director Operations at the NATO Joint Command HQ Northern Europe in Stavanger, Norway.
In 2005 he became Deputy Commander of the Bundeswehr Operations Command in Potsdam and in 2006, its Commander. From April 2006 to February 2007 Lieutenant General Viereck was appointed EU Operation Commander of the EUFOR mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Since 2009 he is in his present position as Deputy Chief of Staff Joint Force Training at NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk, VA.
His military decorations include the Commander of the National Order of Merit (France), the 3rd Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle (Estonia), the Armed Forces Cross of Honour in Gold (Germany), the National Defence Medal (France), the Medal of Honour (Latvia), the Cross of Merit 2nd Class (Estonia), the Medal of Merits 1st Class (Latvia) and the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) Medal EUFOR RD CONGO (European Union).
